October 13: Breaking news on more elective surgery list restrictions!
The Department of Health has just announced that as of 15 October ALL non urgent surgery will be postponed in both Public and Private hospitals in Metropolitan Melbourne and some regional areas. This means that the only patients that can be operated on must qualify as Category 1 or urgent Category 2. These changes are intended to support the healthcare workforce to treat patients with Covid 19 requiring hospital admission.
The Department defines urgent elective surgery as “where admission within 30 days is clinically indicated for a condition that has the potential to deteriorate quickly to the point that it might become an emergency.” This however, does include cancer treatment and surveillance.
As many of you will be aware, this restriction comes on top of the reduction in 50% list capacity. We know that this is a very worrying development for so many of our patients who are booked for surgery. Our doctors will assess their lists and define categories. We will work urgently to advise all those affected.
